The Elo score on Tinder has been the gloom or doom for many users over the years.

It can either make you the most desirable match around or bury your profile six feet under without many possibilities of recovery (although this can be reverted).

It's also one of the best-kept Tinder secrets that nobody knows exactly how it works.

And it’s finally been changed after so many complaints from users who lost their chances for unfair reasons.

In this article, we are going to dive right into the secrets of Tinder’s Elo score.

What is it? How does it work? What is my Elo score? How can I increase it?

Is it possible to reset my Elo score?

These and more questions will be solved. And by the end of this, the so-called desirability score will be just another feature from Tinder that you will be able to master and use in your favor.

Let’s get right into it.

Let’s get right into it.

Here's what we'll cover:

What is the Tinder Elo score?

Before getting into the juicy details of how to increase or fix your Elo score, it’s important that you know what it is.

The short answer, that you probably already guessed, is that is a punctuation that Tinder gives to your profile.

This helps to rank and organize all the profiles in the app from best to worst.

With that order sorted, Tinder will arrange the profiles that every user sees in their swipe feed, and according to how the score changes, the profiles available for swiping will change too.

Of course, these changes can be for better or for worse.

But before diving into that, let’s understand how the Elo score works.

How does the Elo score work

The system was borrowed from chess, and it’s also used in other sports, as well as multiplayer online games.

We won’t bore you to death with the science behind it, but rather explain in simple terms that the aim of the Elo score is to ensure a fair game for everyone and also attempt to predict future outcomes.

This means several things:

First of all, that you will be paired to swipe with profiles somehow equal to yours.

Then, if you increase your reach by matching with hotter people, your score will go up. This will lead Tinder to show you better profiles to match with.

But if you decrease your standards by matching with uglier persons, your score will go down. And you guessed right. This will make Tinder show you worse profiles every time.

When your profile is at the top, and you match with a lower profile, their score goes up, but yours goes down.

And this works all the way around too.

Meaning that matching with a greater profile will increase your score, but lower theirs.

And when similar profiles match (which is the point of the algorithm), both preserve their punctuation.

However, Tinder won’t be showing you good profiles if you have a low score, the same way that your good profile won’t be shown to bad ones.

Tinder’s algorithm of desirability

This algorithm that rewards and punishes you every move on Tinder is also known as desirability score for obvious reasons: the higher you rank, the more people want to match with you.

Although, don’t let this name deceive you. Your looks have nothing to do with your score and more with your behavior in the app and the quality of your profile.

The app will give an initial classification based on the general appearance of your pictures (analyzed with IA).

This is why having good photos matters.

Instead of looking at your dazzling blue eyes, what the app will notice is the bathroom in the background of your selfie.

And then again, your kissable mouth won’t be worth a dim if Tinder notices that your bio is empty.

It’s true that these rules apply to every user, but unfortunately, their behaviors are worlds apart.

Therefore, the Elo score is different for women than for men.

Elo score for women and men

Like we’ve explained in our main article about Tinder, the dating app works differently for men than for women. And this affects the Elo score of both.

Which oftentimes results in a vicious cycle that is not so hard to break once you know how you got there, and what to do to step out of there.

Or even better, avoid falling in that hole the first place.

Let’s see the differences on Tinder for both first.

•There are fewer women on Tinder, and they tend to choose more carefully.

•When a woman starts on Tinder, she’ll have an awful lot of matches to pick from.

•And also an unreasonable number of conversations started.

•This will boost her natural confidence, leading her to be pickier, because she can.

•The more selective she becomes the more increases her Elo score.

•It will go all over the place when she starts matching with the most handsome around.

•Her profile will eventually become unreachable for average guys.

•Unless she stops using the app or screws her profile, she will remain on top of the ranks.

•There’s plenty of men. Most addicted to right-swiping. This will drop the quality of profiles available.

•He will go from liking the hottest girls, to the average girls.

•When the average girls don’t like him back, he will lower his standards.

•As likes keep going down, he’ll get desperate and swipe right on every single girl. Pretty or not.

•Tinder will notice the low standards and show worse profiles every time.

•At some point, Boosts and memberships will be offered to revamp the profile, but they won’t work as they promised.

•Eventually, the profile will get totally lost because there’s no more Elo score. Meaning: nothing more to do on the app.

You can see it crystal clear: while one goes up and up, the other is digging their own Tinder grave.

But don’t you worry, we’ll tell you what to do to avoid falling into this deadly trap, and how to get out of it if you already fell.

Just keep reading.

What is my Elo score?

Whether you’ve been on Tinder for a while or you just opened your account, this might be drilling into your curiosity.

Truth is that Tinder will never ever reveal this to anyone.

But there are three clear clues to guess pretty accurately how good or bad your score is.

1. Quality of profiles available to swipe

You see beautiful people or is it a freak show?

Wait a minute. At least you can see profiles, right? If there’s no availability at all, this might be due to three factors: you either live in a very small region, you set up a fairly small radius of search, or you got shadowbanned.

If you opened the radius and/or changed the location but still have nothing to swipe, jump straight into the resetting section.

2. Quantity of likes recived

The number of likes that you receive weekly is important as well. Is it going up, down, or steady?

If you have Tinder Gold or Platinum you have a bonus, because you can see who liked you and get a better idea of your score.

The better the profiles who swiped you, the higher is your Elo score.

3. Amount of matches made

Giving and receiving likes can be one thing, but making matches is an entirely different matter.

With a subscription and likes coming your way this shouldn’t be a problem because you can go straight to the people who liked you to match with them.

If you aren’t making any matches at all, you might be starting to get in trouble.

Yes, we get it, you want a good-looking girl who stops your heart every time you look at her, but be realistic and swipe girls you can actually match with.

How did you earn that score?

At the moment of opening your account for the first time, Tinder will assign you a score that ranges from above average to good depending on the quality of your profile.

Along with this, will come what is known as a “noob boost”.

This means that for the first 48 hours or so, your profile will have high visibility in your location.

This will be the highest on your time Tindering, so make good use of it, because not even a Super Boost will even it.

The intention of this is to give you a friendly kick in the butt to push you into having a good experience on the app, and hopefully, help you get good matches ASAP.

However, Tinder will be watching your every move. Which can play against you very quickly.

If you fall into the trap of lowering your standards, there’s no wonder why your score bit the dust.

We know that it’s easier said than done, but if you want to preserve a good score and even better, being able to increase it, refrain from being desperate.

Instead of losing your mind swiping anything and everything, plan beforehand a good profile, craft an awesome Tinder bio, and be selective of the profiles you are presented with.

Will you date that fat woman who is thirty years older than you and owns forty grumpy cats?

Not really, right?

Let’s explore in detail how to increase your Elo score.

Profile pictures

It’s true that not every person swiping on Tinder is superficial.

That doesn’t take away the fact that your profile picture is the first thing they will be looking at when swiping, so give them something good to see.

We have a complete guide on how to take perfect profile pics and another one that goes deep into the advantages of editing photos.

Be honest and objective, ask some friends. Better yet if they are of the same gender you intend to attract.

man-profile

Another alternative is to use Photofeeler. You only need to upload your pics, and the exact kind people you want to attract will tell you sincerely what they think about them.

It might hurt you at the moment knowing that those pictures taken with your phone aren’t good, but trust us, professional pictures will make a world of difference.

If you want to skip more insanely long articles, consider showing your talents, avoid covering your face, looking to the camera, and portray a true, compelling version of yourself.

Tinder Bio

This space wasn’t created to be left blank.

Pour in there your true personality. Show your sense of humor. Tell them what you want to find.

Give a perfect glimpse of what it’s like being with you and make those right swipes come your way.

Bonus points if you manage to trigger reactions that lead the other person to start the talk.

You have no idea how good this is for your Elo score.

If you feel lost on how to craft the perfect Tinder bio, come check our complete guide on that and shove the excuses away.

Or contact us, this is what we do for a living. You’re in good hands.

Social Media

Before you say we didn’t warn you: this can backfire.

As things had unfurled, Tinder had been working on security measures to get rid of scammers and bots.

One of their ways to do this is by gathering all the information possible of every user.

To give you an idea of how much Tinder can collect, a journalist who was researching on this, requested the data that Tinder had of her, and received an 800-page document.

We know, this makes Tinder look like a modern-day love mafia.

And it sort of is one.

All the information collected has a double function: track your moves to set and keep updated your Elo score, and ensure that you are a real person using Tinder for what it was created for.

Besides that, you can take advantage and use social media as another tool to attract the kind of person you’re looking for.

social-media

The more social media you link, the more you give of yourself.

This means that people will get to know more about you and when you have good quality social media profiles, that add value, have good posts and extraordinary pictures, you will be taking more points to your Elo score.

However, we say this can backfire. And it can happen in two ways.

The first is that if your social media aren’t good, your profile won’t get likes.

Therefore, you won’t match and your Elo score will go down.

The second is that if you want or need to reset your account, it will be harder for you to erase your tracks from Tinder, and easier for the app to spot when you’re back.

This might not seem like a big issue, but it is.

If you reset your account and get back with the exact same data too soon, Tinder can ban you.

You want to avoid that.

So, at the moment of linking your every social media account, consider what it may cost you.

Anyway, it’s not recommended that you connect every single social media profile to your Tinder.

A couple is more than enough.

See it as the means to an end. Not the main course.

Activity

Consider your activity as the time you pass interacting in the app.

This can be updating your profile, swiping, or messaging, but also counts every like, match, or message received.

Tinder watches everything.

So, pay attention to what you do every time you open the app, and remember to show daily.

We’ll get into this further in a while. Hold on.

man-phone-2

Limit the swipes

Now, if you have a subscription, you might be thinking something along the lines of “why in hell should I limit my swipes when I have an unlimited amount of them.”

And you do, but they’re not there to be thrown around like confetti even if that’s what Tinder tells.

There’s a 2000 swipe limit per hour, and no subscription will save you from it.

Although, there is a reason behind the limit.

Despite how fun it can be to spend a lot of time swiping left and right, the point of Tinder isn’t looking at profiles like a menu only to decide you weren’t hungry.

Tinder is expecting you to find someone for something.

It doesn’t matter what. The point is that you get there.

swiping1

So when you only swipe mindlessly, Tinder will recognize this behavior as the one of a bot, and make you pay for it.

It can affect your Elo score or get you banned. That depends on Tinder.

To avoid this, don’t spend that much time swiping, and when you do, pay attention to what you’re looking at.

It’s true that some Nopes and some Likes will be instant, but they shouldn’t be the majority.

Look through profiles, see the pictures, read the bios, listen to the anthem…

Swipe right on quality people who have a full profile, aren’t redirecting you to other social media, and are the middle ground between pure hookups and finding their other half (unless you like either of those).

Make a conscious decision if you really see yourself or not spending time with that person before swiping either way.

When you do this, Tinder will notice that you’re serious-even if you’re looking for a hook-up- and your Elo score will start going up.

thumbs-up

Like-match ratio

Tinder will pay attention to the difference between the number of right swipes that you give, and the number of matches that you make.

If you match 8 out of 10 likes sent, Tinder will take this as a good ratio and keep or improve your Elo score.

But if you match less than 3 out of 10 likes sent… Well you know. Elo score goes down.

A good way to never worry about this is by having a Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum subscription.

Since these allow you to see who liked you, it’s possible to jump straight into matching and there you go. 10 out of 10 all the time.

Just consider that to have Likes, you need a good profile.

There’s no shortcut for that.

pinkies

Changing location

It’s important to repeat that a good profile is key.

Let’s imagine you already have that done.

A good way to boost your Elo score is by using the Passport function that comes with all the subscriptions to move you to a place where your demographic type is highly desirable.

This will sound rude and disrespectful, but it works.

Change your location to a big city in a country that’s not top-notch and voilá!

This works especially well with white, lean, tall guys in a city like Shanghai. Trust us.

The relocation will make you stand out from the rest, which will make those right swipes rain on you like confetti.

And your Elo score will rise like foam.

Make sure to match some people and start conversations to keep the score up and so Tinder doesn’t catch on your little trick.

After some time of success, when you get back to your actual location, the profiles available to swipe should have increased in quality.

map

PRO TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR ELO SCORE

Treat your Tinder profile more like your love resume than a game.

Try to keep an 80/20 swiping ratio. This is 80% of left swipes and 20% of right ones.

Be honest, fun, and authentic to attract people who will give you a good number of interactions.

Make sure your texting skills are good. Replies speak volumes to Tinder.

•Don’t ghost matches.

•For paid subscriptions, avoid changing location too many times.

The new algorithm for Elo score

The way that Tinder classified profiles with the help of the Elo score and their super-secret algorithm was considered unfair for most users.

As you might come to the conclusion yourself, the way it worked was claiming to make the game fair for everyone, when in reality, conditions were uneven for the users.

And there was no way to know how Tinder decided who was considered attractive and who wasn’t.

Or how the points were assigned to profiles who belonged to average people and not supermodels.

blame-you

That’s why in 2019 Tinder announced important changes to their algorithm.

They also said that the Elo score was going to disappear.

But such change in an app that works mostly worldwide takes time to be implemented everywhere.

What left us with a hybrid that combines the old Elo score that favors what Tinder considers good-looking people, along with new rules that are trying to ensure a truly fair game for every user.

So now, you must pay attention to the points described above and combine them with the other two parameters that were thrown into the mix.

thinking

Activity

The first thing that Tinder wants is to favor active users.

What “active” means for Tinder now:

Constance

Constance is key.

Spend an average of half an hour daily, distributed in 5-minute chunks or so throughout the day, especially on peak hours. (Weekdays from 6 to 9 and Sundays after 9)

Activity

All activity counts.

Swipe, match, read and answer messages and keep the profile updated. Let Tinder know that you’re present and interested.

Interactions

Interactions count more now.

Don’t wait more than 24 hours to message a match for the first time, and don’t take forever to reply to the messages.

Another important change that Tinder is doing to help users match, is showing in the feed people who are currently active or tend to be around the same hours as you.

This means that if you like to open the app at 12 p.m. and at 12 a.m. Tinder will try to pair you with people who also like to open the app around midday and midnight.

And it won’t matter if at 12 p.m. you can find a lot of hotties while at 12 a.m. there are only fatties. (Not that they are, it’s just an example).

The new aim of Tinder is to pair people whose schedules are similar because this way, interaction can be done faster.

This can also mean that when you take the flirting to other apps or real life, it will be easier for both to find time to meet or chat, or whatever you want to do.

Location

The radius of the search will also become more important.

Tinder will be looking for people who are active and close to you whenever you open the app.

Since most people are more inclined to accept meeting someone who lives or works closer to them, this makes sense.

Think about it: if both log in at the same time, around the same places, you might have more in common to start a conversation and kick it off from there.

So, to squeeze the juice of this new parameter, we recommend that your location is updated every time that you change places to use the app.

Resetting Elo score on Tinder

Two things before we tell you how to do it:

The first one is that you must know that this is a desperate measure.

Something you do as your last resource once you fall into “Tinder’s basement” and you can’t get out of it.

Try first improving your profile with good quality photos and a stunning bio.

Change your swiping behavior and reply to the messages rather sooner than later if you manage to start a conversation.

If nothing worked and you feel like resetting your profile is the only option left, we must warn you too that it’s advised to do it only once a year. Twice tops.

It’s also better doing the reset when your account has been inactive for too long, than because you lost your Elo score shortly after opening Tinder.

The second thing you should know is that there’s not such a thing as resetting your Tinder profile.

Is called that, but what you’ll actually be doing is erasing an account to make a new one with the exact same information.

If you also had a subscription running, it’ll get lost as well. And there’s no refunding.

If you forget to cancel a membership and you delete your Tinder, you will be paying for the subscription with no easy way to get rid of the automatic charge, so pay attention.

Full “quick” reset

It’s called quick because you can do it in an hour or so.

If you were waiting for a magic 5-second trick, well… there’s not such a thing.

Now, remember the part about Tinder gathering every piece of information about you?

In order for this reset to work, you need to be careful about it.

This means unlinking accounts, deleting the access to Tinder from Facebook, and in most cases, making new accounts from scratch so Tinder doesn’t realize it’s the same person again.

If you are willing to go through that, keep going.

  1. In case that you had a good bio, copy it and paste it somewhere else.
  2. Same for your pics. If they’re good, make sure you have a backup.
  3. Go to the Profile tabSettingsScroll to the bottomDelete account.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the account.
  5. Uninstall Tinder.
  6. Make sure that there’s no trace of the app on your device by looking through the folders and erasing any remnant information.

  1. Log into the Facebook linked to Tinder
  2. Go to SettingsApps and websites
  3. Look for Tinder in the list and click the X or on “Remove” to delete it.
  4. Confirm the action.

In case that you want to link your new Tinder with Facebook again, you’ll need to create a new Facebook account as well.

Some say it can be empty, but we recommend that you add some friends, like the same pages, upload photos, and even start posting so Tinder knows you are a real person.

The same goes for every other account that you had previously linked. Make new ones.

For former subscribers to Plus, Gold, or Platinum, it’s also important to know that you’ll need a new Google Play or Apple ID, depending on which OS you use.

For users who logged in with a phone, you will need another number that has never been used on Tinder for SMS verification.

After all those steps are complete, you can create a new Tinder account.

Make sure that your pictures are excellent, your bio is compelling and that you are honest.

And don’t forget to follow the advice above to increase your Elo score to make the reset worth it.

Patient reset

One of Tinder’s policies is that they will erase all the information of a user three months after the profile was deleted.

This is why you need to create new accounts if you opt for the first method.

But if you’re patient, and you don’t feel like creating a new Facebook profile, or asking your family or friends for their phones, this is a good option to get a reset on Tinder.

It also gives you plenty of time to think thoroughly about the profile that you’ll set up.

Three months are more than enough to hire a photographer, get good pictures, craft an awesome bio, learn how to text (or hire us so we can guide you through the whole process) and get back at the top of your game.

It’s also a safer method, because the chances of Tinder noticing what you did are much, much smaller.

We won’t lie, no method is fail-proof.

With both, you have the risk of Tinder spotting you and shadowbanning you.

But waiting 90 days will almost grant you a clean restart without trouble.

Shadowbanning

We’ve been throwing the word around a lot without actually explaining clearly what it means.

A Tinder shadowbanning is the way of the app to make you invisible after you lose all your Elo score or if they catch you resetting your profile.

They will never tell if you get shadowbanned, and you won’t notice either at first glance.

But it’s in the tiny things where you can know if Tinder punished you.

If your profile stops having all kinds of activity and you don’t get a single like, chances are that you have been shadowbanned.

When this happens, the only fix is a hard reset.

Let’s repeat it one last time just to be clear: you must be careful at the time of resetting your Tinder to avoid being shadowbanned (again) as soon as you open the new profile.

It would be a shame that after spending quite some time taking new pictures, thinking of a good bio, improving your texting skills, and possibly opening new accounts on social media all go to waste.

Wouldn’t it?

So, proceed with caution and good luck.

Hovalo tip: Remember that resetting your profile is sort of okay-ish once or twice a year. Especially when it’s because you stopped using the app.

The verdict about Elo score on Tinder

It was meant to be a helper but turned to be a downer in some cases.

It was supposed to be erased, but it’s still important no matter what Tinder claims.

The good thing is that it’s not unbeatable.

The steps to conquer your Elo score take a little bit of effort, patience, and time, but it’s all worth it once you master them.

And see it this way: you’re not competing against Tinder.

You will be constantly competing against yourself to become always a better version who can attract the exact kind of person that you expect to have by your side.

It can be tiring the thought of changing your profile completely and having to take Tinder as something serious even if you weren’t looking for something serious.

But, you reap what you’ve sown.

So, in the end, if you really mean to find someone through Tinder, it’s worth it to make a good profile and work towards improving your Elo score, because it will work wonders for you.

Remember that if you feel lost in the process of bringing up your Elo score, creating a winner profile or you feel stuck with the next steps after making a match, you can always schedule a free call so we can get you the exact kind of help that you need.

Happy Tindering, and see you next time!
