Bumble review…  The dating app where women make the first move.

But before we get started, let’s get a brief overview of why making such a thing. Because the drama went something like this:

One of Tinder’s co-founders was dating a Marketing directive (of the same company). It was all sunshine and flowers for a while until things started to go down, down, down.

What was apparently a good romance, ended in the Court with a mediatic drama.

But from there, Whitney Wolfe decided she had had enough, and it was time to make things differently.

Once she had a goal in mind, Andrew Andreev, Badoo’s founder, gave her a hand and Bumble saw the light for the first time in 2014 as a promise of fresh air for women who were tired of conventional online dating.

In this article, we will tell you everything that you need to know about this app that on the surface might look like just one more, but that has come to change for the better what many people think about dating, befriending, and even networking online.

What is Bumble app?

Chances are that you got here because of the dating part, and that’s perfect because in this article we’ll focus mostly on that.

But just so you know, the dating option is only one-third of the kind of connections you can make through the app.

To put it in simple terms, Bumble is somewhat like having Tinder, Instagram, and LinkedIn all gathered in the same place.

Above that, Bumble is centered on making a good impact in society and doing all they can to spread their beliefs in equity, no discrimination, and empowerment throughout their users, ONGs, and foundations that they support.

With those thoughts in mind, plus the previously mentioned desire to create a dating app where women had the upper hand, Bumble had gathered more than 55 million users worldwide.

Pro tip: Previously through The Beehive, and now The Buzz, you can know more about their beliefs, causes and also read success stories of people who had met and stayed together thanks to Bumble in all three categories, not just dating.

Who’s on Bumble?

Although the main aim of the app is to gather people who look for meaningful and or serious relationships, the truth is that you can find a little bit of everything around here.

Most people around Bumble are looking for hookups or friendship, followed closely by the ones who are interested in the serious stuff, and the others that are open to see where things go.

Around 55% of users are around 25 to 34 years old, 40% are between 18 to 24 and only 5% are above 35 years old.

So, you might want to take this into consideration before getting in.

How does Bumble work?

For starters, you need to go to their site or download the app available for either Android and iOS.

Then you need to create an account.

Hovalo tip: For a quick tutorial on this, you can go straight to the section where we teach you how to do it. ->link<-

Like all similar apps, Bumble is swipe-based, which means that no matter what mode you choose between date, bff, or bizz, you’ll have a bunch of potential matches to swipe right for a Like or swipe left for a Nope.

Within the app, it is possible to message, send pictures, call, and video call as much as you want until your match and you decide it’s time to move to another platform or meet in real life.

How to match on Bumble

Very easy, and the same way that in every other app of this kind: when two people like each other’s profiles, the match is made.

In the end, all matches (date, bff, and bizz) will be stacked in a match queue from where you can see messages, chat, and call.

However, the main charm of Bumble relies on what happens after the match is made.

  • Woman - Man

  • LGBT+, BFF & BIZZ

Woman - Man

As we said in the beginning, here, women have the upper hand, since it’s a female friendly place.

Meaning that they are the only ones who can send the first message.

Or establishing another form of contact since calling and video calling also count as first moves.

Which (hopefully for them) leads to decreasing the number of absurd messages that they tend to get when trying their luck in online dating.

Also, Bumble is aimed to avoid ghosting as much as possible.

That’s why women have only 24 hours to start a conversation.

And after they do, men have another 24 hours to respond.

When both parties have established that first thread, they only get a “Your turn” notification with every new message, but they can be sure that the match won’t get lost anymore.

If there is no first message or no reply after the time runs up, the match expires and it’s necessary to pay to get a new chance at talking.

Moves Making Impact

As mentioned in the beginning, Bumble isn’t focused only on being a bridge for different persons to meet.

They are also actively helping society through their users.

Every time that a woman joins the app, she’ll be asked to choose one of their three causes:

  • Fight against hunger with 412 Food Rescue.
  • Pay equity with Future for us.
  • Human rights with Nadia Murad.

Once one of the three is chosen, every right swipe, match, and conversation started will generate benefits given straight to them.

Additionally, it is possible to make donations inside of the app and is also possible to change causes in the future.

Bumble subscription tiers

Until 2020, there was only free Bumble and Bumble Boost.

Due to the success that Bumble was having, its creators saw fit to split the benefits into two categories and Bumble Premium was born.

However, you must know that this top-tier subscription wasn’t introduced worldwide.

Instead, it’s been unlocked slowly country by country, so there’s a chance that you still can get Bumble Boost with every single feature that it had originally.

But because Bumble’s goal is to have both options available everywhere in the near future, we will split their features as well to explain them.

Note that many of the features will list are very similar, or exactly the same as features that you can find on Tinder paid memberships because you know *cof, cof* same creator behind the app *cof, cof*.

Bumble Boost features

Let’s see all the goodies you’ll be getting.

Pro tip: You can be eligible to get a free 7 day or 14-day trial, more so during your first days on the app, so keep an eye on the notifications just in case.

Rematch

If the 24 hours after a match went by without having any interaction, the Rematch feature allows you to extend the time to write the first message so the match doesn’t get lost again.

Note that profiles are constantly “recycled” in your profile feed, so if you’re patient enough, the same person will appear again as a possible match, and maybe, you can make it work on the send go without spending a penny.

return

Unlimited Extends

With free membership, you can only extend the time after a match expires once a day.

However, with Bumble Boost it is possible to do this as many times.

This means that you can get another 24 additional hours to extend all the matches that you want.

woohoo

Unlimited Swipes

Just like any other dating site trying to create meaningful relationships, there is a limited amount of Likes that a person can give daily.

With the Unlimited Swipes feature, this limit is forgotten and you can throw away those Likes like confetti.

swipes

Backtrack

This is pretty much the “Rewind” option from Tinder Gold.

In some countries, you have one Backtrack free a day for those times when you accidentally swiped left a hottie.

Once paying for the membership, you can undo the last swipe as much as you want.

Pro tip: A cool feature from Bumble is that you can Backtrack the profiles by shaking your phone to the left.

rewind

Spotlight*

Have you heard about the Tinder Boosts?

This is exactly the same.

Once active, you’ll get 30 minutes of preferred exposure of your profile within your area and according to your set preferences.

As a paid member, you’ll get one free every week.

A good thing, just like it happens with Boosts, is that you can buy them separately with or without a membership, so there’s no need to subscribe if this or the SuperSwipes are the only goodies that interest you about the premium features.

Hovalo tip: Best days to activate a Spotlight are Sundays around 6 pm. Or when bad weather hits, since there’s a peak of 20 to 40% in activity during storms.

boost

SuperSwipe*

Maybe you’ve guessed by now that this is the equivalent of a Super Like.

As a paid member, you’ll get 5 of these every week for free.

To send them, just tap on the yellow badge with the white heart that you will see in every profile.

If someone sends you a SupeSwipe, you will get a notification, and in their profile, a note will appear as well.

Like the Spotlights, you can buy this separately even as a free member.

superswipe

Bumble Premium features

As a Bumble Premium user, you will get every feature from Bumble Boost, plus another four that we’ll explain right now.

Beeline

This is the “See Who Liked You” from Tinder Gold.

In Bumble, The Hive is how they refer to all their users, and your Beeline is the place where you can find every person that has liked you.

When you unlock the Beeline feature, the profiles get revealed, so you can match instantly instead of swiping mindlessly hoping for the other person to like you back.

penguins

Incognito

When this mode is active, your profile will be hidden from The Hive and will be revealed just to those potential matches that you swipe right, so they can decide to Like you back (or not).

This feature is especially useful for people who need to take care of their status or appearances, like public figures, politicians, celebrities, or famous in general.

incognito-mode

Travel

Another one borrowed from the big cousin.

This one is the equivalent to the Passport function.

Activate this and change your location when you’re going to travel, or if you are moving to a new place and you want to meet people even before landing.

Just consider that if you’re staying at home while using this function, your location will reset to default after a week.

However, there’s no limit to how many times you can change places.

spongebob-travel

Advanced Filters

With a free or Boost subscription, you can only activate two filters at a time.

This means that the profiles shown will comply with two parameters that you choose.

But as a Premium subscriber, you’ll have the chance to decide between all the options available:

  • Verified profile
  • Types of dates/meetings
  • What are they looking for
  • Drinking habits
  • Smoking habits
  • Exercise habits
  • Height
  • Education level
  • Politics
  • Religion
  • Family preferences
  • Star sign
  • Pets

Hovalo tip: Although Bumble isn’t very strict about these filters when showing you profiles and less so if you live in a small town, consider that narrowing too much the parameters can make it difficult to find matches.

boost

Choosing a membership

Stick with Free if:

You live in a small town or city, you don’t travel much and you’re not planning on moving anytime soon, but you’re still interested in meeting people around your area.

Choose Boost when:

You don't have time to swipe. This membership is especially useful for people who lack the time to log in daily and who live in average cities. Not so large, and not so small towns.

Go for Premium if:

You don’t want to spend much time and can’t be keeping track of the 24-hour rule. You either travel a lot or move constantly. And/or if you need to keep a social status or image intact.

Prices

Time for those numbers.

Truth is, the prices aren’t so wild like other dating sites around, and there’s a very big advantage that Bumble has over the rest: weekly subscriptions.

Unlike other apps, if you’re curious about a certain subscription tier, you can just purchase it for a week, see how things go, and if you like it, go ahead and get an extended period of time.

The only downside of this is that a weekly payment is more expensive than a 6 month period, but to dip your toes, is very much worth the try if you got some money rolling around and you’re willing to give it a try.

The other perk is that Bumble Premium has the Lifetime option, which means that you only pay once, and then you don’t have to worry anymore about renovations or constant charges.

All rates are in USD.

How does Bumble algorithm works

The mechanics, yet again, are very similar to the big cousin in two ways: they haven’t been disclosed, and users agree that they’ve discovered some of its secrets.

Here are some basic functions you may want to know about the workings of how Bumble picks the profiles shown to you.

  • Profile Feed

  • "Your Type"

  • Discerning

  • Popular Profiles

  • Activity

  • Deleting App

People who already liked you tend to appear first

This isn’t an exact rule, but it’s very common that this happens to bring up the chances of both parties getting more matches. The logic behind this is:

  • Most people don't want to spend much time swiping.
  • If they start matching right away, it's more likely they want to stay on the app.
  • Staying on the app talking to matches will make people happy to keep swiping.
  • Eventually, this behavior should lead to dates or virtual meetings.

Beyond Bumble Date

It was said at the beginning that the dating part was only a third of Bumble.

After covering all the basics of how the app works, it’s time to explain a bit more about the other two versions of the platform: bff and bizz.

What is Bumble BFF?

When you set your Bumble profile to the bff option, it means that you’re only interested in meeting new people without any other purpose than spending a good time.

This feature is especially useful if you moved recently and want to know the place and the people, at the same time that you have a great time.

As you (should) know by now, when you’re into online dating, your profile needs to have pictures that showcase the best of you in terms of finding a person who’s interested in a romance or a hookup.

For the friends part, your pictures need to be aimed at showing what you want your new friends for.

The main options are traveling, going out for clubbing, food or knowing places, and getting coffee to chit chat.

In this instance of Bumble, it doesn’t matter that you look picture perfect but rather that you display your true personality more than ever, since friends won’t (or shouldn’t) mind about your looks.

It doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to take out those hideous bathroom selfies, but rather that it isn’t so crucial that your pictures are taken and edited by a professional since your interests and likes are what will shine here.

Hovalo tip: Even though Bumble bff is just to make friends, don’t get surprised if some of your matches want to date or go for something more than friendship. Just don’t freak out, and don’t be the one who does that, unless there’s a mutual agreement.

teamwork

What is Bumble BIZZ?

There can be the case that you’re only interested in building or expanding your professional connections.

For this, you can use LinkedIn, or just set Bumble into bizz mode.

Here, you can find other professionals from your areas of expertise and interest, but also find others who can help you develop your talents, and even get you into your next job.

In this case, great pictures are a must, since it is your resume.

Also, every text in your bio has to be better than ever, because you will be showcasing how you are in a working environment, and people need to know they are getting involved with someone good at their thing, who’s also trustworthy.

All of Bumble at the same time?

There’s no limit to the times you can jump from one mode to the other.

In fact, you can do it!

In your match queue, you can differentiate every person by the color of the ring around their profile picture, so you know which ones are for dating, which for friendship, and which for networking.

Conversations and matches won’t get lost as you change.

However, you really need to pay attention to those names and color rings before you tell your crush to travel through the country in the second message, ask a friend to fund a project, and send a nude to your potential business partner.

Well… There’s a chance that one confusion like that has a good outcome in the end. We’ll leave that up to you. But you can get in trouble at some point.

And speaking of nudes, as one of Bumble’s measures to ensure that women are comfortable within the app and don’t get undesired content, there are filters that detect inappropriate pictures, blur them, and have to be tapped to reveal the content.

So at least, that business buddy won’t drop the phone so hard if you make a mistake.

Bumble tutorial

Now that we’ve told you everything you need to know, it’s time for a short tutorial in case you want to open your profile right away.

(The screenshots shared are taken from a browser, but the process is mostly the same with every device)

1. Go to bumble.com or download the app

2. Join → Select if you want to join with Apple, Facebook, or with a phone number.

  • Using Facebook will be faster, and will also use your pictures, which can be counterproductive for the mode you want to join.
  • Login in with your phone number will let you keep accounts apart, but the process will be longer since you’ll need to verify the number and enter data like name and birthdate manually.

3. Once your Name and Birthdate are filled in, you’ll be asked to Select your gender.

  • If you don’t identify as Woman or Man, go to More options to find the most adequate.
  • In case you can’t find yours, Bumble is open to requests and constantly updating to include everyone.

4. Select the Pictures you wish to upload (this can be provided by us, Facebook or a professional photographer)

  • If you’re logged in with Facebook, you can choose the 6 you want to be displayed or select your own.
  • You can also log in with Facebook or Instagram at this step to make it easier.
  • Filling the 6 required pictures with high-quality and varied images will level up your chances of getting the kind of matches you expect.

5. When you're happy with your set of 6 photos → Continue

6. Allow access to your location

7. Agree to the conditions of good behavior

8. Choose the mode you want to start with. Remember you can change it later.

9. Verify your profile → You’ll be asked to take a picture doing something specific.

  • Having your profile verified will give other users a sense of safety and certainty that you’re a real human.

10. Submit the verifying image → Got it

  • It’ll take only a few minutes for your picture to be approved if it was taken as requested.

11. Select who you’re interested in meeting: Men, Women, or Everyone.

  • You’ll get a tutorial inside the app to learn how to swipe.

12. Go to Profile to complete your Personal Information

  • A full profile helps get more and better matches when it’s filled accordingly.

15. Fill in your bio

  • About me is the place where you can describe yourself, portray your personality, and hint how it’s going to be meeting you. You only get 300 characters to do so and make sure the answer is tuned according to the mode you set the account.
  • Add your Job (optional)
  • Add your Education (optional)

16. Fill in at least a couple of Move makers (Prompts)

  • These are short phrases to complete with information about you.
  • Just like it goes on Hinge, this can lead to an easier conversation, know you better, and decide if the match is good for both.

17. In Filters, you can adjust preferences of Gender, Age, and Distance

18. Once you go through these steps, you’re ready to go!

"Hack" Your Beeline for Free

Before you get all your hopes up, there’s a spoiler alert: if it’s free, it can’t be that easy or fast.

Now, it’s true that to reveal all the Likes in your Beeline you need to upgrade to Platinum (or Boost, depending on where you live).

However, there is a very simple way that you can skip this step without spending a dime.

Just be observant!

Unlike other sites, Bumble doesn’t blur the profile pictures that much, and depending on where you live, maybe there aren’t many people around.

  • So, go to your main feed, and look at the overall colors and shapes.
  • Go back to your Beeline, and see if you find anything similar.
  • If you do, go back to the main feed, Like the profile, and Boom!
  • A match was made.

Remember there’s also this unique chance to use the memberships on a weekly basis, which allows you to get rid of the curiosity without making a large purchase.

As we mentioned early on, using Bumble can be like having 3 apps in one. How many other sites can say that, huh?
